Volumo, an online electronic music store, is challenging the dominance of Beatport, Juno Download, and Traxsource as the fourth player in the global electronic music market. Founded in early 2022 by three long-time friends from Ukraine, Volumo has already signed agreements with major distributors and offers a curated store experience focusing on the needs of artists, DJs, and sound producers.”
An online electronic music store Volumo opened in early 2022. Volumo was founded by three long-time friends from Ukraine: Oleksandr Dzyubenko, Anton Severynenko, and Denys Borysov. It is a remote-first company with branches in the Estonian city of Tallinn and Ukraine.
Oleksandr is an experienced developer who worked with Avid Technology, whose most famous product is a digital audio workstation Pro Tools. Anton and Denis are former DJs, sound producers, and owners of the techno label Outstrip Music.
Having a comprehensive vision of the problems and prospects of the publishing industry, Anton and Denis decided to create their music store, which should be first oriented toward the interests and needs of artists. When they approached Sasha with the idea of Volumo, they had the ambition not just to open «another online store» in addition to Beatport, Juno Download, or Traxsource but to create an innovative product in the form of a new-generation store. They had the ambition to create a site that would become a convenient and modern working tool for professional DJs and selectors.
Volumo is already fundamentally different from other platforms. It is a curated store where each release is pre-moderated, which makes selecting and searching for music much more pleasant and fast. Another advantage of searching for music on Volumo is the tag system, which enables each author to choose his sub-genre or mood of the release. In the future, a recommendation system will augment the product experience to accurately select music for the user based on their preferences, like the one deployed in Apple Music or Spotify but not yet present in electronic music stores.
Rooted in a professional music environment, the Volumo team operates on the principle of «getting downloads back on trend.» According to their plan, downloads should help monetize the artists’ creativity and, more broadly, positively impact the quality of new music.
Some might say Volumo’s strategy is too romantic, but it’s working well. In just one year, Volumo signed an agreement with many distributors, including FUGA, Symphonic, and Triple Vision. Their catalog includes almost 30,000 artists and 3,000 labels from over a hundred countries. Volumo’s trio of founders emphasize that they are not looking for venture capital investment or planning a quick exit, which often kills the initial idea and vision of many great projects. So, there is no doubt that they will «get downloads back on trend.
