Ahora mismo estoy en mi apartamento en Nueva York. Comencé mi día despertando… dando un agradable paseo… ¡y tomando un café!
¿Cuál fue tu primera incursión en el mundo de la música electrónica?
Creo que el primer artista de música electrónica que realmente amé fue una banda llamada Little Dragon, son suecos. Encontré su música en la escuela secundaria y me obsesioné. Luego vi a Nicolas Jaar vivir en Nueva York un par de años después y fue increíble. Creo que fue el primer set en vivo que vi. Empecé a ir a clubes más en serio en Europa y me interesé más en cómo mezclaban los DJ, qué pistas seleccionaban, etc. Es una posición muy poderosa pero arriesgada, porque controlas la energía, y quería intentarlo. para mí.
¿Cuándo empezó a tomar forma la idea de poner en marcha un proyecto? ¿Siempre ha sido algo que quisiste hacer?
He hecho música desde que era muy joven, ¡pero publicarla en el mundo me pone nervioso! El verano pasado estaba haciendo muchos temas y me di cuenta de que había algunos que amaba y me sentía listo para lanzar. Recibí muy buenos comentarios de algunos amigos y envié la música a los sellos, pero nunca supe de nadie. Finalmente me conecté con los chicos de Polychrome y dijeron que estaban comenzando un sello y amaban mi música, y me di cuenta de que esto iba a suceder de verdad. Es muy emocionante cuando las personas se conectan con algo que hiciste.
¿Cómo definirías el sonido de One Hundred Nights? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás?
Para mí, el sonido está muy influenciado por Detroit y Chicago, pero escucho tantos tipos diferentes de música que siento que es difícil precisar mi estilo. Con este EP quería contar un poco de una historia y tener diferentes canciones con diferentes estados de ánimo, y para mí se siente como la historia de una noche de fiesta. Quedarse con sus amigos, bailar como un loco y luego caminar a casa al amanecer. Sin embargo, esa es solo mi propia interpretación. Espero que otras personas lo vean de diferentes maneras.
¿Qué artistas te interesan estos días?
He estado escuchando mucho a Kuniyuki Takahashi, Jerome Hill, Omar S y Boo Williams. Mi hermano también es músico y recientemente me envió un LP de Idrissa Diop que es genial. Bufiman es un gran productor que creo que más gente debería conocer. Ah, y Doja Cat. Lo siento si es cursi pero la amo.
¿Cómo logras combinar géneros tan dispares? ¿Cómo logras darles unidad y armonía? ¿Qué tienen en común para ti?
Creo que la energía y el estado de ánimo son más importantes y pueden ser más efectivos que el género. Si el momento requiere algo, tóquelo. Para mi propia música, siento que la melodía es lo que hace que todo sea coherente para mí. Me encantan las pistas desnudas y de percusión, pero no puedes superar una gran melodía. La textura también es muy importante y siempre trato de equilibrar diferentes sonidos. Tal vez al final del día se trate solo de mantenerlo fresco, manteniendo ese elemento de sorpresa y misterio; si la música es demasiado obvia o predecible, ¿qué ganas al escucharla?

Recientemente grabé una mezcla en vivo para la serie de Polychrome, puedes escucharla en su SoundCloud. He grabado otras mezclas antes, pero esta me tomó más tiempo y energía, porque realmente quería seleccionar pistas que siento que todos deberían escuchar. Y quería fluir bien, soy un perfeccionista, así que pasé mucho tiempo pensando en cómo contar una historia a través de la mezcla. Por supuesto, en cierto punto solo tienes que confiar en tu instinto y seguir la corriente. Lo grabé en mi apartamento con mi equipo DDJ.

Hi ! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
Right now I’m in my apartment in New York. I started my day by waking up… going for a nice walk… and having coffee!
What was your first foray into the world of electronic music?
I think the first electronic music artist I really loved was a band called Little Dragon, they’re Swedish. I found their music in high school and became obsessed. Then I saw Nicolas Jaar live in New York a couple years later and he was incredible. I think that was the first live set I saw. I started going to clubs more seriously in Europe and got more interested in how the DJs were mixing, what tracks they were selecting, etc – it’s a very powerful but risky position to be in, because you control the energy, and I wanted to try it for myself.
When did the idea of starting a project start to take shape? Has it always been something you wanted to do?
I’ve made music since I was pretty young, but putting it out into the world makes me nervous! Last summer I was making a lot of tracks and realized there were a few that I loved and felt ready to release. I got really good feedback from some friends, and I sent the music out to labels, but never heard back from anyone. I finally connected with the Polychrome guys and they said they were starting a label and loved my music, and I realized this was going to happen for real. It’s so exciting when people connect with something you made.
How would you define the sound of One Hundred Nights? What is the concept behind?
To me the sound is very influenced by Detroit and Chicago, but I listen to so many different kinds of music that I feel it’s hard to pin my style down. With this EP I wanted to tell a little bit of a story and have different songs with different moods, and to me it kind of feels like the story of a night out. Meeting up with your friends, dancing like crazy and then walking home at sunrise. That’s just my own interpretation of it, though. I hope other people see it in different ways.
What artists are you interested in these days?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Kuniyuki Takahashi, Jerome Hill and Omar S and Boo Williams. My brother is a musician too and he sent me an LP by Idrissa Diop recently that’s great. How do you manage to combine such disparate genres? How do you manage to give them unity and harmony? What do they have in common for you?
I think energy and mood are more important and can be more effective than genre. If the moment calls for something, then play it. For my own music, I feel like melody is what makes everything cohesive for me. I love bare, percussive tracks, but you can’t beat a great melody. Texture is also so important and I’m always trying to balance different sounds. Maybe at the end of the day it’s just about keeping it fresh, keeping that element of surprise and mystery — if the music is too obvious or predictable, then what are you gaining by listening to it?
How would you define your sound?
Always trying to keep that element of surprise!

I recently recorded a live mix for Polychrome’s series, you can listen to it on their SoundCloud. I’ve recorded other mixes before, but this one took the most time and energy for me, because I really wanted to select tracks that I feel like everyone should hear. And I wanted to get the flow right — I’m a perfectionist, so I spent a lot of time thinking about how to tell a story through the mix. Of course at a certain point you just have to trust your gut and go with the flow. I recorded it in my apartment with my DDJ equipment.
Can you tell us something about your current or future projects?
All I can say is that I have a lot more music that I hope to release!
