We sat down with George Calle, ahead of his LP that is due to drop in the next few weeks. Lets find out more about this interesting artist.
Hi there ! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
I’d love to paint some exciting picture for you but I start every day off dropping my two youngest sons off at school. Family is my favorite thing in the world. They make the music sound better to quote the Stardust record.
How did the idea for your new record take shape, what is thr story behind Havana Hustlers?
The LP came about during the lockdowns and massive deaths in my immediate neighborhood. The Bronx New York was like Ground Zero. This Album truly saved my life or at least my sanity.
What artists are you interested in these days?
I’m always interested in the backstory behind artists. I gravitate towards the tragic stories: Prince, MJ, Whitney, James Brown…my dream artist to work with right now is Julie McKnight. At the precise moment I’m about to pass on to the other place, I’d like to do so to Finally. It just brings me to another place spiritually.
Where would you say your sound sits, firmly in one genre or a mixture?
Having come up on 70s AM hits and really affected by disco and later punk and then hairspray Rock and very early Treacherous Three era rap through techno, founding one of the first house labels and then later playing a decidedly very early proto-festival fist pump music, I can’t help but be stuck at Eclectic with a heavy dose of house and disco with a sprinkle of Latin.
How do you see the music scene in this the moment?
It is exciting that so many can follow their dreams as DJs and producers. But I miss this when the traffic was lighter. Coupled with the corporate assasination of the DJ as tastemaker, the overpopulation of “DJs” is not in my opinion a case of more is more.
Tell us something about your current or future projects?
Im very excited to present this full length album to the world after so many years producing tracks and spinning music. I’m already thinking next album and am excited to collaborate with some really great talent. I think my next one will be like a Duets type thing. Nothing beats a collaboration with a talented partner you respect. It all depends on the success of this LP. I like to build a long story arc. I hope you enjoy this first chapter!
