Who Music Magazine welcome Felipe & Derek from Shades of play for a brief chat about life, what’s going on now and what’s going to go on later. Enjoy.
Hi there ! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
Right now we’re sitting in our Washington D.C music studio aka Felipe’s apartment.
Derek: I started my day chasing my granddaughter to change her diaper. It was all downhill from there.
Felipe:I was on a redeye flight from LA to DC listening to babies crying the songs of their people. Kinda tired….
When did the idea for your new record take shape?
About 6 months ago and just took sometime to develop. We have jam sessions every Tuesday and organize our ideas on those days.
How would you define the sound of your latest work? What is the concept behind it?
I would say it’s an experimental, moody , brooding and honestly we jammed out and had a rack of ideas, like most musicians and put together something more approachable than our previous album while trying to give a little something for everyone
Who is inspiring you most right now?
EJ Mecklenburg, he’s well known in Thailand and he does what he wants…trust us you’d want to party with him…
No really. He is friend of ours who has been training in Muay Thai in Thailand for a year now, never gives up on his dreams, has his black belt in Jiu Jitsu and still finds time to party….
Where would you say your sound sits, firmly in one genre or a mixture?
Absolutely a mixture, we are habitual line-stepper.
How do you see the music scene at the moment?
it’s actually quite refreshing to see the state of the modern scene and were it is headed. People are more open to new things and the right people are starting to search deeper for sounds and things that make them feel.
Tell us something about your current or future projects?
We are working on our next releases in the studio right now as well as lining up some summer gigs!
