In the midst of deadlines and endless reviews, Maracuja’s “Portrait of a Soul on Fire” is a breath of fresh air. This debut EP from the trio is a joyful blend of afro-beat, funk, and jazz, released under the Secret Music label. The tracks are a symphony of live percussion, bouncy bass lines, catchy hooks, and ethereal vocal poems, creating a musical tapestry that is infectious and uplifting.
“Bassoon” is a chilled-out afro beat groove with a meandering bass line and layers of floaty synths, a lighthearted ocean-view worthy poolside soundtrack. The remixes are a treat, with Rhythms of Prescott’s rework of “Bassoon” being a floor-filling, groovy, chunky monster of a track, and Rise Ashen’s rub of “Chanel Blues” playfully highlighting the original’s more hidden elements, creating a captivating journey. It’s a record that, despite the time constraints, is worth every second spent listening.
