For our final release of the year, we revisit one of Unlearn’s biggest anthems of 2021, One Day, with two huge new remixes.
The original collaboration of Lizzie Curious and Doc Brown won over DJs and music fans alike, with its classic piano riff and powerful Lizzie voice giving it a classic house feel combined with a club feel. inherent in all Unlearn releases. Now, just in time for the holiday season, we’re releasing two new mixes of Freshcobar & Lavelle Dupree and Lizzie Curious herself.
Freshcobar & Lavelle Dupree have published on some of the best labels in the world, including UNDR THE RADR and Farris Wheel. They’ve transformed the tune into a late-night groover packed with hard drums and synth grunts, as Lizzie reworked her own track, creating a fast-paced, moody performance that is the very definition of feel-good house music in a proper way. to finish. It was an incredible year for Unlearn.
We have had the pleasure of interviewing Lizzie and this has been the result.
Hi there Lizzie! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
Greetings to you! I’m just in my studio, listening through to a bounce of a new remix 🙂 It’s Sunday today, so I started my day with a lovely long beach walk in the winter sunshine with my dog Luna, and then got straight into the studio!
When did the idea of music as a career start to take shape? Has it always been something you wanted to do?
To be honest I have always loved music. I started playing musical instruments when I was really little, and by my teens I was playing the piano, cello, flute and also training in classical singing. When I was at Uni I discovered electronic music courtesy of some incredible all night raves in London, and that’s when my love affair with house music started and I soon got bitten by the DJ bug. Over the years, my passion for DJing evolved into wanting to learn how to produce and also be able to write and record vocals as well. I feel so lucky to be able to be involved in the music industry in so many different ways!
How would you define your sound?
My aim is to make people feel happy and joyful through music, whether that’s through a live DJ show, my live streams on Twitch or the music I produce and vocals I write. I really love so many different genres of house, from disco through to tech house bangers, but the common thread is always going to be lots of groove and energy!
What other artists are you interested in or inspired by these days?
Fatboy Slim has been a long-time inspiration for me – from his inimitable charisma behind the decks to the many iconic tracks he has produced. So, to have him supporting one of my recent tracks – Lizzie Curious & James Hurr ‘In Your House’ [Toolroom Records] – has been super special for me! I am also a huge fan of Mark Knight and am super stoked to now have two releases on Toolroom. Lastly, David Penn is an absolute house maestro, every track he puts his magic touch to turns it to gold!
You’re a Groove Cruise resident – can you tell us about some of the most memorable moments you’ve had there?
Groove Cruise is the world’s largest floating dance music festival and it really is a mind-blowing experience like no other! And wow – there have been so many memorable moments for me! I have to say, being chosen to open for Kaskade at the Groove Cruise 10th anniversary beach party in Cozumel was something that will always stay up there with my favourite experiences. And after my set, I was cooling off with a refreshing dip in the sea before getting back to the party, and who should I bump into but none other than the legendary Corey Feldman and his lovely wife, who were also sailing with Groove Cruise! I am a huge Goonies & Lost Boys fan, so to meet this amazing actor in real life – and to find out he’d been grooving away to the tunes whilst I was DJing – was pretty incredible!
How did you first hook up with Doc Brown and Unlearn?
Doc Brown and I met online many years ago, and then our friendship was cemented in real life when I sailed on Groove Cruise for the very first time. He & Lauren were so friendly and welcoming and we have become good friends over the years. When the pandemic first hit, after a couple of months DB and I were both working hard to grow our communities on Twitch and I felt that it could be the perfect time for us to collab. ‘One Day’ was truly a track bourne out of lockdown, we wanted to create something that captured both of our vibes and in fact we tested several versions with our Twitch communities – having their feedback and support definitely helped us to create a track that we’re really proud of!
How do you approach remixing a record of your own? Does it give you a chance to really hone in on what you did the first time around?
When we first came out of lockdown – and when One Day was first released – a lot of DJ sets for me were very much afternoon affairs (especially here in the UK where we were navigating different stages of restrictions.) So in those early days coming out of the lockdowns, there were quite a few occasions where a banging, underground tech house tune wouldn’t have been quite the best fit! So first up I was focussing more on an edit that stayed really true to the original, honing in on the piano and vocal with a groovy, carnival style bassline, bringing a bit of a more housey flavour to the proceedings….something that would work well for daytime parties, as well as peak time in a club. After I had played it out a few times, I really felt it was actually becoming a remix with it’s own character, which is when I approached DB to see if Unlearn would be interesting in releasing a remix package. As it happened, great minds think alike and DB had been thinking the same thing!
What else do you have cooking we should be looking out for?
Well first and foremost, on the live shows front, I have some incredible gigs coming up! I have the absolute honour of opening for Fatboy Slim in Brighton (UK) on 27th December which is absolutely a dream come true. Then on NYE I will be headlining at my fave beach bar in Worthing (the lovely seaside town where I love on the South Coast of the UK), alongside an all-star female line-up which will be awesome. And then, at long last, our Groove Cruise family will be reunited in Orlando on 20th January. Our voyage (the first in two years due to the pandemic) will see about 4000 like-minded souls reunited on the biggest ship we have ever sailed on and I’m thrilled to be on the line-up alongside amazing artists including Gorgon City, Claud Von Stroke, David Penn and so many more….it’s going to be out of this world!
I’ve been hard at work in the studio and before the year is up, alongside my remix of One Day, I also have a collaboration with Da Funk Junkies coming out on In It Together records. And my amazing community on Twitch continues to grow every week, so I will be continuing to stream every TUNESday and FriYAY, you can find my channel at www.twitch.tv/lizziecurious
