An interview with POLA WOMEN

Intriguing electronic duo Pola Women land on Rework’s Exlove label with a fantastic new six-track EP.
This duo is formed by Desiree Lune with Michel Kuebler, a couple that is divided between Berlin and Stuttgart and is inspired by the aesthetics of the disco and 80s cinema. Now they publish «Disco Disco», a work that consolidates the career of artists of the duo.
We have had the pleasure of interviewing the duo and this has been the result.

Hello ! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?

Right now we are both located in Stuttgart, Germany. We meet at our studio from time to time and practice for a future live show. Starting the day with good music and coffee, nothing special. Preparing for a dj gig at «White Noise» Bar Stuttgart tonight.

When did the idea of starting a project start to take shape? Has it always been something you wanted to do?

We already met around 10 years ago in the studio to write some tracks but it did not work out. Sometimes it needs time until everyone is ready for a cooperation. This year we listened to some rough demos and two month later «Pola Women» was born.

How would you define the sound of your latest work? What is the concept behind?

Think it’s a mix between synthwave, disco and indie with analog synth treatments and drum machine beats. We wanted to create simple and minimal song structures that we can play on stage without a full band.

What artists are you interested in these days?

There is a lot of cool actual music we like. Some of our favourite Bands or Artists are Geneva Jacuzzi, Boy Harsher, Glass Candy, Rainbow Arabia. Beside this love to collect and listen to rare music of the 60s.

How do you manage to combine such disparate genres? How do you manage to give them unity and harmony? What do they have in common for you?

With the same unique vocals on all tracks and the synth based production, we have the chance to create our own sound even if we switch between music genres.

How would you define your sound?

80s inspired synthesizer based music without any Guitars and no real Drums. We are not so much into all technical issues of the production so we try to listen more to our feelings in what sounds good to us.

Can you tell us something about your current or future projects?

Desiree is currently working on some solo music and art projects. I am in the Studio with Daniel Varga (Rework) to collect the first ideas for our next «Rework» album. Besides this you can also expect new music next year on our exlove label from «Sceti», «She Lies» and «Philipp Roller».
