We have had the pleasure of speaking with her, because of her latest work: The Calling. Enjoy!
Hi there ! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
Hello, I am in my studio in West Sussex. This morning I started as per usual with toothpaste and coffee.
When did the idea of starting a project start to take shape? Has it always been something you wanted to do?
I always wanted to compose a song even before I was a dj. I felt sure I could manage some alchemy of my own I started with samples and breakbeats.
How would you define the sound of your latest work? What is the concept behind?
The concept behind Automaton started with the 2nd song I wrote on first album “Need” that’s where Automaton comes from – Rachels perspective in Blade Runner (Ridley Scotts 1980’s classic) because it inspired my imagination. This second album is just a good excuse for writing a load more good pop songs about love, life experience and also the frustration of lost love and difficulty of breaking into the music scene after “The Calling” , We have 1 more album in the bag.
What artists are you interested in these days?
Im interested in anything I deem to be really good, namely, this morning, Hercules Love Affair, Cate Le Bon, The Gorillaz, The Arctic Monkees and several rounds of David Bowie.
How do you manage to combine such disparate genres? How do you manage to give them unity and harmony? What do they have in common for you?
If we take 1 song from the album, Im Dreaming for example the song is dark at best but its also song of hope and the synths take you up there to heaven for the dream, the verse bring us back to life with their angry vocals and thumping drums, the middle 8 takes us somewhere else entirely. That’s the fun of the process.
How would you define your sound?
When Im songwriting I Like to find a minimal stripped back groove Id say its pure synth pop but then there are rock and soul crossovers so its aways a treasure trove of cool indie pop crossover.
Can you tell us something about your current or future projects?
This release is the sophomore album by AUTOMATON, the 3rd album is mainly written but nowhere near production, we are rehearsing for some gigs we are doing some festivals over the Summer.
