Dario Margeli is a singular producer who has opted for a New Retro Wave-style production. Examples of this style of electronic production are hits like «Blinding lights» by The Weeknd or Running In The Night and Ollie Wride’s FM-84. The song is fast and danceable and has great analog synths.
We have had the pleasure of speaking with him and this has been the result.
Hi there ! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
I am in Southern Europe in a big city. I have an office job, so I woke up 7:30 Am, so that I could be on the computer and connected to my office work at 8:45AM. One thing I do is to meditate using a picture I have of my childhood for 10 minutes in the morning while listening to a violin solo.

When did the idea of starting a project start to take shape? Has it always been something you wanted to do?
My song «I’m That Kid» started with me wanting to feel like I felt when I was a kid playing. I have a picture I took as a kid that I look at in the mornings. When I wake up in the morning, I need to work on lifting my mood. So I thought I should write an uplifting song that can connect me to the good feeling I had as a kid.Music has always been a fantasy. Maybe too much. It is not healthy to think that life is like music. Real life is work, as in working in an office.

How would you define the sound of your latest work? What is the concept behind?
I gave the producer my vocal track with the vocal melody. He sent me back the finished recording and to my surprise he had created a New Retro Wave production in the style of Kavinsky or Fred Falke or Goldroom.
What artists are you interested in these days?
I like Smooth Jazz Electric guitar, for example Norman Brown, Nick Collione or Les Sabler. Sometimes Paul Hardcastle. I need quiet music so that I can work while it is playing. I am also influenced by Persian violin solos. Frankie Knuckles had gentle yet danceable music.
How do you manage to combine such disparate genres? How do you manage to give them unity and harmony? What do they have in common for you?
The common part of my music is the vocal melody which is influenced by Persian musical scales.
How would you define your sound?
Motivational, inspirational, self help music. Uplifting and with a positive adult message. Musically gentle without being boring. There are always great musicians on my records
Can you tell us something about your current or future projects?
My current project is the song «I’m that kid» which has an italo-disco feel mixed in with Synthwave. It wants you to feel good like a kid. The song also has an Italian version «Sono quel bambino». The process of writing the song, searching and working with musicians, making the video, promoting the song, marketing, chasing Spotify playlisters, all of that takes many months of work. I will not do another project until next year.
