In this interview, we catch up with Jacob to discuss the creative process behind ‘Get Somethin’, the challenges he faced, and what he hopes listeners get from this release.
Hi Jacob Colon, how are you?
Things have been going very well for me. I’ve put out some great music these past few weeks and certainly exciting to keep more coming.
What was your main inspiration for producing ‘Get Somethin’?
I used the chord progression from one of my favorite Drake tracks that I was listening to at the gym. It came up on my daily mix a few times and eventually it triggered some inspiration to create a song.
Can you walk us through your creative process when producing this track?
It took me a while to choose the correct pad/keys sound to complement this chord progression. The chords had a lot of notes in it so I couldn’t choose something that made it sound muddy.
Did you face any challenges while producing ‘Get Somethin’? If so, how did you overcome them?
Not too many. The real challenge was selecting the right sounds which can be quick or a long task.
Are there any specific artists or genres that influenced the production of ‘Get Somethin’?
Yes. As I mentioned previously, I was inspirited by an old Drake record.
What was the most challenging aspect of producing this track?
Matching the chords with vocal sample. I was set on the chord structure prior to selecting a vocal sample, so I worked backwards on this part and went through dozens of vocals to fit the progression.
How do you think ‘Get Somethin’ compares to your previous releases?
It doesn’t differ too much because I like to keep that mysterious vibe, but I stepped out my comfort zone in choosing the type of progression I used.
Is there a specific element of ‘Get Somethin’ that you’re particularly proud of?
I like the RnB vibe the vocal gives.
Can you tell us about any unique production techniques you used in this track?
Standard bass layering, drum configuration. Nothing out of the norm.
What do you hope listeners take away from ‘Get Somethin’ when they hear it?
The energy that I put into this is what I hope they receive.
