We have had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Hooker, and this has been the result.
What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?
I used to go to a Youth Club when I was young and they had a all in one Latec International DJ Turntable. It was set up along with lots of disco lights and 7 inch chart singles. We all used to use it but didn’t know how to mix. That was definitely the thing that got me started.
Do you remember any album or concert that made you see everything differently?
I went to see Technotronic at a venue called Fort Regent in Jersey where I grew up. They had not long had their hit ‘Pump Up The Jam’. I already loved music and it inspired me even more.
Since you got into this professionally what helped you grow the most?
Being consistent and always embracing the changes within the industry. Surrounding myself with peers who are supportive. Remaining true to who I am as a person and musically.
How is the music scene in your city?
I have been living in Phoenix, Arizona since 2013. When I first moved here very few people were into the Progressive House sound. Fast forward to now and the scene is thriving. We have DJs from all over the world come and play for key promoters, such as Relentless Beats.
I started hosting my own Re:Sound Music label parties in 2017 and they have built up a great following. It’s amazing to see the turnaround over the past 10 years and it’s very special to be part of the changes.
What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?
If I’m not working on music/DJing I like to socialize with my friends outside of bars/clubs. We have some amazing restaurants around Arizona. I love the al carbon style tacos from Taco Boys and the Thai food from Glai Bann. The Collins has an awesome Happy Hour.
How do you focus on making music, spending time with your family, and planning future projects?
I plan my days so that I have time allocated for everything. It’s the best way to work because I know exactly what I’m doing in advance.
Google calendar is perfect for this because my Wife can see it and add to it too.
Do you have any last words of wisdom?
Stay consistent and true to your style. Music trends come and go in waves but it’s better to stick with what you love to make and play.
