LEV is the new alias of London producer James Levey. With several projects under James’s belt, including the sought after My Friend on Anjunadeep, the man behind the alias is no newcomer to the underground music scene.
Here he creates a blissful Balearic version of the original. Infections bass line underpins a beautiful melodic journey that will melt any dance floor.
We have had the pleasure of speaking with him and this has been the result.
Hi James, thanks for talking to us. Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
Thanks for having me guys! I’m currently chatting to you from my studio in West London. Had a coffee and went to the gym in the rain ha.
When did the idea of starting a musical project start to take shape? Has it always been something you wanted to do?
I think from the age of about 10/11 I definitely felt a deep connection with music. I never studied it at uni or school, however it’s always been something I’ve been able to do to a certain level and it’s naturally in my blood for sure. I guess I started thinking about it more seriously when I was finishing up uni.
How much time do you get in the studio with your collaborators? Or is it mostly remote working these days?
It depends what alias I’m working on but for LEV It’s pretty much 99% remote. Tbh I prefer to make music alone, I’m never that creative when there’s too many people in the room!
Tell us about your new remix. Is this going to be the direction for your sound from now on?
It’s actually one of my favorite tunes I’ve made. To me it feels super positive and always makes me smile when I listen to it. Direction wise I’ll always make melodic stuff however it’s not always as happy as this one is, I like to go dark quite a lot of the time too!
What other artists are you interested in these days?
Dusky, Bicep, SWIM, BOP, Jon Hopkins… the list goes on!
Can you tell us anything about your projects for 2023?
We’ve got lots of new music in the pipeline with my other aliases as well as some really fun shows coming up!
