We spoke with the German artist Romaski about his new vinyl on YNFND called «Karma Calling»
Hi Romanski, It’s a pleasure to have you on board. How was your Summer (the first normal one in 2 years)?
I travelled with my 4-year old son a bit through northern Germany in our van. We even visited a festival together.
In September I played at a festival in a remote location in Albania. It was really amazing there.
What can you tell us about this new Ep ‘Karma Calling’?
Karma Calling is a corona shutdown baby. I had a lot of time for producing. I have my studio at home and so it happened that the voices of my wife and my little son ended up on this EP. It is a very privat an intimate work I would say. That’s the reason I love it so much.
Why ‘Karma Calling’?
It sounds good! Haha
I don`t know. Free association it was…
And how about YNFND? What can you tell us about the label and its way of working?
YNFND is definitely one of my favourite labels. I love their productions and their special approach. I think they are very cool! 🙂
Let’s get nerdy. What hardware and software have you worked with?
I work with Logic Audio. I have only one hardware synth wich is a Moog Sub 37. My favourite software synths are NI Massive, Kontakt, Battery. I love the software Synth Diva. It sounds pretty analog. Often I’m too lazy for the Moog and prefer to use Diva.
When you produce… what is your work criteria?
I record a lot of stuff like guitars, percussions, piano etc. Then the material gets heavily processed most of the time. Often my starting point is a sample, that inspires me. I layer sounds a lot and by that try to find textures that sound pretty unique.
What is your biggest inspiration?
Things that inspire me are changing all the time. At the moment I think Photay is pretty awesome.
In general there is a lot of inspiration for me in older records from the last century. Mainly those that weren’t made in Europe or in the US. I use samples of those recordings from time to time.
Can you recommend an artist or artists that you have been listening to lately?
Oh I don’t know, there are so many.
Eh, let’s have a look at my latest record purchases: Photay, Boof, Darkside, M.Rux, Kundan Lal, Landhouse, Nutia, Khruangbin, Islandman
Well, before saying goodbye, we would like you to tell us what things you have prepared for the near future?
Oh yes: I just finished some african influenced mid-tempo tracks. Now I have to find a label for them. 🙂
