Who Music Magazine speak to Sleight of Hands. We talk about where they are right now, whats going on, and whats next…
Hi there ! Where can we find you right now? How did you start your day?
You can find us under Sleight Of Hands on all the usual places – and Green Gorilla Lounge. Started our day off with some good music and a bloody mary.
When did the idea for your new record take shape?
It’s been pretty organic! We’ve been making different types of tunes over the past 4-5 years, testing them out, giving them a tweak. When Covid happened it felt like a good opportunity to clear the decks and put these tunes out, especially given all that’s been going on with the lack of clubs and lockdown.
How would you define the sound of your latest work? What is the concept behind it?
We had this concept that each record would have a straight up club a-side and then a ‘couldn’t clear the sample’ deeper cut on the flip side … a bit like what you’d often find digging around on white labels. There were five in the series and we wanted to collect them as an album project, so that’s what led to the album.
Who is inspiring you most right now?
Honestly it’s a what … seeing how cities have changed, but getting back to traveling. Picking up the vibe of a city that’s had this ‘insular’ moment … there’s this buzz and excitement about what’s next, and as a result we’re just seeing a ton of new acts and projects that people have been working on during this time.
Where would you say your sound sits, firmly in one genre or a mixture?
Oh it’s definitely a mixture – we try and draw from the different music we like, but also the vibe of the San Francisco that’s had such a mixed bag over the years – both positive and sometimes a little darker side.
How do you see the music scene at the moment?
We feel like it’s healthy and on an upswing having been through some tough times – what we love about it right now is a lot of new names coming up, and it feels like there’s a real sense of joy and camaraderie to make things happen.
Tell us something about your current or future projects?
Just really happy to be putting this work out at last, there’s always new beats in the cooker. Sleight of Hands will be playing the Outer Limits event with Max Cooper and Doc Martin to celebrate the release. End of the day, we just hope people are happy and get enjoyment from this record. Appreciate being able to share a little about it!
